Hardwood Flooring — Naperville's Specialist

Hardwood is what Angel Hardwood Floor Corp was built around, and it's what we do best. From brand new installations in Naperville new-construction homes to restoring century-old pine floors in historic houses near downtown, we've worked with every species, finish, and installation scenario over 10+ years in the western suburbs.

Hardwood flooring is a long-term investment. Done right — with proper subfloor prep, correct acclimation, and quality finish coats — hardwood floors last for generations. Done wrong, they squeak, gap, cup, and fail within years. We take every step seriously because we know the difference.

We work across all of DuPage and Will County, including Naperville, Lisle, Wheaton, Downers Grove, Aurora, and 12 other western suburbs. If you're in the area and need hardwood flooring work done, we'd love to come out and give you a free estimate.

Hardwood Services We Offer

  • New hardwood installation — nail-down, staple-down, glue-down; all subfloor types
  • Engineered hardwood installation — floating or glue-down; excellent for variable humidity and over concrete
  • Hardwood refinishing — sanding down to bare wood, staining, and finishing; transforms worn or dated floors
  • Hardwood repair — scratches, stains, water damage, gaps, squeaks, board replacement
  • Stain color changes — go darker, lighter, or gray; we'll test the color on your actual floors first
  • Over radiant heat — engineered hardwood installation over in-floor radiant heating systems
  • Hardwood over concrete — glue-down solid or engineered hardwood over concrete subfloors
  • Custom inlays and borders — decorative elements for entryways and formal rooms

Wood Species We Work With

The species of hardwood affects the look, hardness, and long-term durability of your floor. Here's a practical guide to the most common species we install and restore in the Naperville area:

  • Red oak — the most common hardwood in American homes; warm grain with slight red undertone; takes stain well; Janka hardness 1290
  • White oak — slightly harder than red oak; cooler, straighter grain; excellent with gray and natural stains; Janka 1360
  • Maple — very hard and tight-grained; works best with natural or light stains; popular in contemporary spaces; Janka 1450
  • Hickory — the hardest common domestic hardwood; dramatic variation in color; very durable; Janka 1820
  • Walnut — rich, dark natural color; takes finish beautifully without stain; softer than oak; Janka 1010
  • Cherry — warm reddish-brown that deepens with age; elegant grain; Janka 950
  • Pine (heart pine, yellow pine) — commonly found in older Naperville homes; warm amber color; softer and shows wear character; Janka 870–1225
  • Exotic species — Brazilian cherry, teak, bamboo, and others available on request

Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood — Which Is Right for You?

Solid hardwood (¾" thick) is the traditional choice. It can be sanded and refinished more times over its life and is preferred in areas with stable humidity. It cannot be installed over concrete or over radiant heat in most cases.

Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer over a plywood core. It handles humidity changes and subfloor variations better than solid, can go over concrete and radiant heat, and is available in wider plank widths more affordably. It can typically be refinished 1–3 times depending on veneer thickness.

For most Naperville homes, either can work on the main floor. We'll walk you through the decision based on your specific situation during the estimate.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Red oak and white oak are by far the most common species in Naperville homes, both in existing floors and new installations. White oak has grown in popularity significantly over the past decade, especially with natural and gray stain finishes. Maple is popular in kitchens and contemporary homes. Whatever is already in your home, we can work with it.

Properly installed solid hardwood flooring can last 100+ years with periodic refinishing. Even engineered hardwood, properly maintained, can last 25–50 years. The key factors are quality of installation, quality of finish, maintenance habits, and humidity control in the home.

Hardwood in kitchens is common and works well with proper care. Bathrooms are riskier — the humidity and water exposure in front of showers and tubs is hard on wood. We typically recommend vinyl plank (LVP) for bathrooms and laundry rooms. In kitchens, hardwood or engineered hardwood both work well.

Most hardwood flooring manufacturers recommend maintaining indoor humidity between 35% and 55%. In the Chicago area, this means running a humidifier in winter (when forced air heating dries the air out significantly) and air conditioning in summer. Seasonal gaps in floors during winter are normal and close back up in spring.

We can source and supply hardwood flooring directly, or we can install material you've purchased. Many homeowners prefer to let us handle sourcing because we have access to quality suppliers and can match species, grade, and color to what you already have in the home. We'll discuss both options during the estimate.
